  51.    Another week, another snooze.  We have been moving all  week,
  52. and  I cannot say that I like it much.  A month's overlap in the
  53. two residences takes some of the pressure off, but drags it  out
  54. as well.  Some of our books are still not unpacked from our last
  55. move.
  56.  
  57.    There are a couple of articles from England that week that
  58. point out the continuing problems of Fido administration.  That
  59. fine balamce between people who are willing to run things and
  60. people who want to run things is particularly elusive.

  70. I've been reading FIDONews for a long time (about 6 years now)
  71. and  I am constantly suprized at how much tolerance and
  72. intolerance are shown in the articles that are printed.  Tom
  73. Jennings held his temper a lot, and some things that he passed
  74. were, I am sure, personally painful for him to publish.  I am
  75. extremely glad that you are continuing his "publish nearly
  76. everything" policy.

  78. Steve Winter's latest broadside against "sodomites" and the
  79. original "Home Schooling Echo" is merely the latest in a whole
  80. series of actions that the whole net has been subjected to by
  81. Mr. Winter.
  82.  
  83. Steve Winter and the "PRIME Network" and his "Pre-Rapture BBS"
  84. here in Durham NC are quite (in)famous, and he has been
  85. suspended from FIDOnet on more than one occasion for both
  86. technical violations and XAB. In addition, Mr. Winter abuses
  87. the local FIDO/Usenet gateway by sending commercial messages
  88. through it on a regular basis, when the Usenet side operator has
  89. constantly asked for limits on commercial use.

  91. It is fortunate for Mr. Winter that others are more tolerant
  92. than he is willing to be. If we were to emulate his behaviour,
  93. he would be out in the cold, and not a part of any network.

  100. First of all and for the record, I would like to make it known
  101. that I never said I was out to get Flame Removed from the
  102. FidoNet Backbone! That was Not And Is Not My Intention!
  103.  
  104. The following was written before several messages were sent
  105. between my SysOp and the Flame Moderator. However, it now
  106. appears, my original concerns have been shunted. I feel this is
  107. an issue that must be dealt with.

  113.   That's right! At least that seems to be the case! But, don't
  114. you dare challenge this issue on Flame. That is, unless you want
  115. your feed cut. Is it normal for a Moderator to ignore policy4,
  116. so he/she can keep this issue mute?  I am a father of two
  117. children and have a protective place in my heart for them. When
  118. I began reading the contents of Flame, I at first thought it was
  119. a bunch of kids using the echo as an adult equivalent! That's
  120. what it sounded like to me!

  142.   I admit this message may have been a bit harsh but in my eyes
  143. it was true.. Boy, I still can't believe the replies I got back!
  144. And I won't repeat them here!

  146.   Of course, when the Flame Moderator read this he was furious!
  147. Needless to say, my feed was cut! Sorry, but this doesn't sound
  148. like policy4 to me! Well, I guess if a Moderator doesn't like
  149. what he sees on his echo, he can warn you and cut your feed all
  150. in one blow! Yep, that's right, that's exactly what happened!

  154.   At first, I didn't want to be removed like that because it
  155. gave him total power without question. After re-thinking this
  156. situation, I've concluded, since I didn't really want to be a
  157. part of Flame anyway, there was no real reason to pursue this..
  158. It's been a few weeks now and thanks to the tremendous efforts
  159. of my SysOp and NC my access to Flame has been restored.. Not
  160. that anything good could ever come out of me posting there
  161. (which I won't)!  However, there is an issue that needs to be
  162. dealt with by FidoNet Officials..
  163.  
  164.   In a couple of the replies I received, it was stated (and I
  165. have most of them on paper), there are indeed minors on Flame!
  166. If *I* wanted access to an Adult board, I would have to show
  167. proof of age! With the language used on Flame, I believe this
  168. echo should be available only to consenting adults with proof of
  169. age.  I know that if I came home from work, turned on the
  170. computer and discovered that my child had been accessing this
  171. kind of echo without my consent, someone could soon be in court.
  172.  
  173.   I was glad to hear that this echo is only available to adults
  174. at my end, but what about all the others? FidoNet is Massive!
  175. I would like to see measures taken to insure that only Adults
  176. and those with Parental or Guardian Consent are found on this
  177. "R" rated Flame echo!

  179.   I know there is someone, somewhere reading this that thinks
  180. I'm just out to cause trouble. If you asked someone who knows
  181. me,  you'll  find  that  just isn't my way.. David Cupp

  184.   After careful consideration, I do admit, the statements I made were
  185. harsh and if I could I would take most of it back. As a father of two
  186. girls, I was and still am concerned about minors being allowed on Flame.
  187. Obviously the Flame Moderator mistook this as a threat. I can see his
  188. position now as to why he pulled my feed to flame, but will never
  189. understand his reason for warning me not to post along the lines which
  190. I was posting, then pulling my feed before I had a chance to reply to
  191. his message.

  242. tried! I did a word search of Policy4 on Flame, Sex, Minor,
  243. Adult and Child! Not one of these words exists in this document.

  245.   As the content of Flame is harsh (or, "a tradition", as
  246. stated above by Flame Regulars), I believe it should be given an
  247. Adult "R" Rating! This would limit Flame access to Adults! Any
  248. minors wishing access to Flame would have to have a consent form
  249. filled out by a parent or legal guardian which conveys The
  250. Content of Flame as Adult..

  262. It may not have escaped the attention of the rest of Fidonet
  263. that zone 2 has been experiencing some "local difficulties" as a
  264. result of decisions reached by the Z2C and handed down to his
  265. FidoNews 10-44                 Page:  6                    31 Oct 1993

  267. RCs to carry out.  As a result, there has been turmoil in
  268. Germany and also now in the UK.  The excuse is that "policy
  269. requires it".
  270.  
  271. Such an attitude turns policy into a convenient tyrant to hide
  272. behind when in fact it should be the servant, the enabler, of
  273. the  network.  More  than anything else, the inflexible,
  274. intolerant and undemocratic implementation of policy, WHEN IT
  275. SUITS THE *Cs CONCERNED, makes them into tyrants as well. It is
  276. the defence used by those who sent millions of men, women and
  277. children to their deaths in the concentration camps and gas
  278. chambers, that they were only obeying orders. Humbug!
  279.  
  280. In the UK, it has been decreed that there will be a grand
  281. shake-up, relocating nodes from one net to another. There is no
  282. rationale for this other than "policy requires it".  Not even
  283. the advocates of the so- called geo-net shake-up have been able
  284. to produce any evidence to show that the existing way of
  285. operating failed to work and work well. It has always been my
  286. understanding that POLICY exists to ease communication between
  287. systems.  Instead, it is used in Europe as an instrument of
  288. oppression.
  289.  
  290. We are told by the UK RC that a formal request for exemption
  291. from any geo-net requirements has lain on the desk of the (now
  292. resigned) IC for more than 4 months. In the meantime, instead
  293. of waiting for this request to be dealt with, the enforced
  294. transfer of sysops continues unabated. Anyone who resists an
  295. imminent move is given a simple choice - move or lose your
  296. nodelisting!
  297.  
  298. What has Fidonet become when the co-ordinators will not listen
  299. to the wishes of the majority and instead act like dictators?
  300. More to the point, what will it become next?  There have been
  301. several requests from region25 sysops for a free vote to be
  302. taken on this issue, with both sides bound to accept the
  303. democratic decision, but these have been ignored by the RC.
  304. Instead, the region is splintering into different camps camps
  305. with the creation of two "Classic" region25 nodelists, one
  306. established by existing *Cs, the other by "grunt" sysops (more
  307. power to their elbows).
  308.  
  309. The regional co-ordinator (supposedly the top man in Fidonet in
  310. the UK) abuses his position and the region daily.  Among his
  311. latest diatribes in the PUBLIC Region25 echo conference is the
  312. following. This was sent to the person democraticly elected as
  313. NC for net 258 after both the RC and the ZC declined to accept
  314. the result of the vote.

  333. The question is, apart from joining one of the "Classic"
  334. breakaways or resigning, what other options exist for the vast
  335. majority of sysops in the UK who are totally sick and tired of
  336. what is going on and simply wish to be allowed to continue their
  337. hobby without needless and petty tyranny? How much more has to
  338. be gone through before those in leading positions within Fidonet
  339. internationally decide that enough is enough and call a halt to
  340. the abuse of this region?

  352. Public Key Cryptography?  Why?  Anything so sensitive  or
  353. important as to require this type of security has no buisness in
  354. echomail, even clear signed messages. Why not?  It serves no
  355. purpose for 99.99% of the readers of an echo. And just how much
  356. would this cost us, who pay long distance charges to transfer
  357. the echoes around the world? Using the example provided by Mr.
  358. Riddle, (Fnews 1042) I came up with 315 bytes extra per message.
  359. Using my rather modest average of 300 messages per day that
  360. comes to 94,500 bytes extra per day (That would be an increase
  361. in my packet sizes of over 25%. How many Sysops would like
  362. that?). And that's not including extra messages produced by
  363. people posting their public keys.
  364.  
  365. We live with an occasional grunged message. We live with
  366. spurious dupes. Why can't we live with less than 100% guarantee
  367. of authenticity? Eventually the software will evolve to handle
  368. all three problems to a very high degree. I, personally, can
  369. wait...

  388. an amazing character here does not try to control.

  391. earthy man, with a twinkle in his eye and a direct and friendly manner.

  395. the Zone 3 Co-ordinator (so sue me Ronbo) he is cleaning up FidoNet
